By-elections, attitudes to gender equality and why you can get "too local"…

There were no voting intention polls over the weekend, and jut as well given that attention was elsewhere. But we may get an ICM poll for the Guardian this morning, so keep an eye out for it.

One piece of polling-related research that was published over the weekend was a Fawcett Society report on gender equality, with polling from Survation. Aside from being an important (and topical) issue in its own right, attitudes to gender equality are fascinating because they're also highly correlated with the open-versus-closed axis that's so important in current politics. That is to say, they tend to correspond closely with other social attitudes, and with age, education, and the metropolitan-versus-provincial divide (and also with EU referendum vote).

The main electoral news was that Paul Nuttall was formally confirmed as UKIP's candidate for the Stoke by-election next month. That is certainly shaping up to be an interesting contest with a lot of moving parts – and therefore tricky to analyse!.

Elsewhere on the subject of by-elections, Mark Pack has a good explainer on why should pay no attention whatsoever to town or parish council results.
