NCP Asks: What now for the Lib Dems?

The first Lib Dem conference since the election has been, by most accounts, an upbeat affair. But are the party's prospects cheerful?
On the one hand, Labour's move to the left has (as Tim Farron has pointed out) opened up a space in the centre for the Lib Dems – no longer in government – to try to occupy. Tuition fees will be ten years in the past by 2020.
On the other hand, the party was routed locally, nationally and in European and devolved elections. It lost a lot of its local strength and is out of contention in many areas.
